Position Summary:
The Senior Public Policy Advocate is a regular, full-time position reporting directly to the Legislative Director in the Political department, and is covered by the collective bargaining unit agreement between HRC and the Service Employees International Union. The Public Policy Advocate works with and is expected to provide leadership to the team of colleagues throughout the organization to represent HRC’s policy positions on Capitol Hill, in federal agencies and in the Administration. The Senior Public Policy Advocate also works with HRC’s state legislative program, HRC’s marriage project and state GLBT organizations on advancing pro-GLBT and stopping anti-GLBT legislation in the states. Advocates have both regional and issue specific responsibilities and are expected to play a leadership role in these areas.
Position Responsibilities:
- Work with team to develop and execute HRC’s positions and strategies around our federal and state legislative efforts to secure workplace equity and family protection for the GLBT community. The Senior Public Policy Advocate will also work on state and federal policies to ensure the GLBT community can be safe and healthy in the community and work to ensure our elected and appointed leaders are fair-minded.
- Communicate with offices on Capitol Hill, particularly within their assigned region, and in coordination with the state legislative team, to state level GLBT and allied leaders, to advocate on behalf of the GLBT community.
- Communicate to, and coordinate with, other Policy and Strategy Division team members and across all departments of HRC. Senior Public Policy Advocates are also expected to work with and play a leadership role in representing HRC within coalitions and at various events.

Position Qualifications:
Candidates should have five years or more experience at the federal and state level and be knowledgeable about the legislative process. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in one or more of the major issue areas on HRC’s legislative agenda. Candidates must be team player, dedicated to the principle of equal opportunity and to bringing about political change.
