HRC Foundation Center for the Study of Equality Research Internship
Overview
The Center for the Study of Equality, the nonprofit, nonpartisan research center of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, advances the understanding and acceptance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people through independent scholarship, policy analysis, and shared knowledge.
The Center is founded on the principles that sexual and gender prejudice is rooted in a false and harmful mythology and that education is the foundation to ending discrimination.
The Center for the Study of Equality has a strong commitment to the development and support of the next generation of thought leaders in the GLBT movement The Center’s Internship Program offers undergraduate students an exceptional introduction into research and advocacy in Washington, DC at the nation’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization.
Activities
The Center Internship focuses on the development of the Intern’s research and writing skills. Responsibilities include filling research requests, conducting preliminary analyses, and preparing summaries of newly released studies from across the spectrum of academic disciplines. Interns are closely involved in the Center’s daily operations and have opportunities to join in other areas of HRC’s work, such as participating in lobby visits or volunteering in local political campaigns. Interns are also expected to make the most of the many government- and nonprofit-hosted conferences, workshops and seminars hosted in our nation’s capital.
Outcomes
Alumni of the Center for the Study of Equality currently work in private research firms, in the labor movement, or are continuing their education in post-graduate programs. Interns develop strong research and writing skills and leave the program with written research summaries and briefs that demonstrate their knowledge and experience. Interns obtain practical experience working for a national GLBT organization in Washington, DC, develop professional skills and begin building a professional network.
