Internship Questions

If your question is not answered below, please email intern@hrc.org.

Are your internships paid? Which internships are paid/unpaid? How much do they pay?

The majority of our internships are paid internships. Interns that are receiving academic credit for their internship at the HRC are unpaid, however, as HRC’s cooperation in getting their academic credit is considered compensation. From time to time, we will also take on unpaid interns if a particular department has an especially high need for help in a particular semester.   We offer both full-time (37.5 hours per week) and part-time (around 20 hours per week) paid and unpaid internships.

Do you offer housing for your interns?

We do not offer housing for our interns.

Where are your internships located? Can I apply for an internship in my city?

All of our internships are located at the national headquarters of the Human Rights Campaign at 1640 Rhode Island Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20036. We do not offer internships in any other locations, and we cannot pay for the relocation expenses of our interns.  Our offices are very accessible by public transportation within the Washington, DC metropolitan area, both by Metrorail (Red, Blue or Orange lines) and Metrobus. For more information on public transit in Washington DC, visit http://www.wmata.com/

Will I be offered a job after my internship?

Interns at the Human Rights Campaign are encouraged to apply for full-time jobs as they become available, and many of our staff members are former interns. Our internship program, however, does not in any way guarantee employment after the completion of an intern’s time.

When will I hear whether or not I was accepted into HRC’s internship program?

Because each department or program hires their own interns, our hiring timeline is very flexible and variable, differing from department to department. We review applications on a rolling basis and will sometimes hire interns long before an internship semester starts. In general, though, we will begin to interview promising candidates by the application deadline. We aim to complete our internship hirings and notify all of our candidates in the month that follows.

Do you accept applications from international students?

We have hired qualified international students in the past, considering them with the rest of our applicant pool. Depending on the type of visa that the student receives, s/he might be eligible to become a paid intern. We generally do not accept applications that are facilitated by 3rd party groups, preferring that interns apply directly using our application website.

Do you require recommendations or writing samples?

Interns are selected on the basis of their online application, cover letter, resume, and phone interview(s). We do not require applicants to include recommendations or writing samples in their application materials, though we sometimes request references and/or a writing sample when following up on a promising candidate’s application. Consequently, there is no need to send in either with your application materials.

To whom should I address my resume and cover letter?

Please address all application materials to "Internship Committee."

Do you accept applications through internship placement programs?

HRC welcomes applications from students who are involved in an internship placement program. We do require, however, that these applicants submit our internship application form and do not accept other applications. We would also strongly prefer to communicate directly with applicants rather than staff at the internship placement program.
