HRC Diversity Intern

The Diversity internship is a paid internship providing programmatic and administrative support to the projects of the Diversity Department.  The Diversity intern reports to the Diversity Assistant, who manages the intern’s tasks, responsibilities, and professional development.
Programs of the Diversity Dept. include alliance-building and outreach; research about the priority issues of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people of color; diversifying HRC membership and leadership; the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program (also known as HBCU Program); activities at prides for people of color; participation in other civil rights organizations’ national conferences; and special cultural outreach projects.

Responsibilities
Provide support to programs of the Diversity Department, including but not limited to 

  • Poviding logistical support to organizing events
  • Crresponding with staff, volunteers, and general membership, including email blasts/event alerts, etc.
  • Poviding support for strategic research projects
  • Mailing educational and promotional materials to events with HRC presence
  • Providing administrative support as necessary to the maintenance of the department’s functions

Qualifications
The successful applicant for this position must have skills for: 

  • Timely multi-tasking
  • Tactful verbal and written communication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other MS Office applications
  • A mature sensitivity to working with people of diverse backgrounds and identities
  • Familiarity with GetActive or other email-blast modules a plus.

Outcomes
From this internship, the intern will learn about: 

  • Incorporating alliances and outreach into issue campaigns
  • Developing and implementing initiatives to increase participation of people of color, women, transgender people, youth, seniors, and straight allies
  • The use of research and framing tools to develop programming
  • Engaging volunteer leaders and membership.

  • This is a paid internship -- Part time (20 hrs, $131.25 /week) or Full Time (40 hrs, $262.50 / week)
  • All of our internships are based out of our offices in Washington, D.C. We cannot provide housing for our interns
