HRC Religion and Faith Program Internship

The Human Rights Campaign Religion and Faith Program’s mission is to change the conversation in this country about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and faith. HRC is standing alongside religious people who are speaking out for LGBT equality. Our approach is twofold: (1) to amplify the voices of faith leaders from all religious traditions who are willing to speak out for LGBT equality and (2) to equip LGBT people of faith and our allies to use their own faith language in advocacy.

Responsibilities:

The Religion and Faith Program Intern will be responsible for at least one project that requires significant research and writing. Further responsibilities include:

  • Implementing logistical details for Religion and Faith Program events
  • Creating bi-weekly Religion and Faith e-newsletters through our online advocacy campaign management system
  • Answering e-mail and phone inquiries from clergy and lay people throughout the country
  • Regularly updating content for the Religion and Faith Program homepage
  • Booking travel, shipping materials and processing financial requests
  • Maintaining up-to-date records of congregation and clergy contacts for the HRC Religion and Faith Program database
  • Researching religious, LGBT, and political topics as needed 
  • Other administrative duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in LGBT concerns
  • A strong sense of compassion and affinity for people of faith
  • Desire to learn (and teach) about a broad range of faith traditions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Aptitude for web-based programming
  • Inclination for web-based research and database management
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Detail oriented

Outcomes:

  • Gain a deeper and broader understanding of faith traditions and LGBT issues
  • Experience working with nationwide networks of clergy, laity, and religious organizations from a wide array of faith traditions
  • Attain practical experience engaging religious voices in local, state, and federal public policy
  • Develop lasting relationships with prominent clergy throughout the country
  • Concrete experience organizing events and building coalition partners
  • Demonstrated administrative skills that are applicable to entry level employment

  • This is an unpaid internship. Credit is available upon request.
