The HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute

Registration has closed for the HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute. Please stay tuned for details on next year’s training.

The HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute is an interactive day of learning based on Harvard Business School’s case study and experiential learning methods. The HRC Communities and Volunteer Relations Program has developed a case study that encompasses many of the obstacles faced by HRC steering committees. HRC volunteer leaders attend the HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute for the opportunity to collaborate with each other and HRC staff and to brainstorm creative solutions to common problems.

Case study learning illuminates the numerous paths to success and highlights that there is seldom one right answer. Case study learning tends to generate self-confidence and it teaches a healthy respect for people’s ideas. These two skills are valuable assets for HRC volunteer leaders.

The HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute is a unique experience because the participants bring their knowledge, skills, opinions and ideas. In addition to learning how to make structured and informed decisions, all participants will meet contacts from other steering committees around the country. The HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute is a fun way to interact with HRC staff and volunteer leaders and to learn many marketable skills to help you lead the fight for equality in your community.

Who should attend this training?

  • All HRC steering committee members are encouraged to attend.
  • HRC Board of Governors members and nominees are strongly encouraged to attend.
  • Subcommittee members who are on a leadership path toward becoming steering committee members are also cordially invited.
  • New HRC volunteers leaders and seasoned steering committee members can all benefit from the HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute.

The HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute programming will start promptly at 8 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. on Saturday. (HRC will provide beverages, a hot breakfast, lunch and snacks.) If participants register to attend, we request that they commit to attending the entire session from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday. The HRC Volunteer Leadership Institute will also include a Friday evening welcome reception a chance to have fun in the city Saturday after the training.

Cost to register/attend:

$50. (This fee is applied to help offset the food and beverage costs during the day. HRC will provide a hot breakfast, lunch and several snack breaks.)

What People are Saying about Last Year’s Leadership Institute

“My personal philosophy is that in order to create effective change, you’ve got to inspire those around you. The HRC Leadership Institute not only inspired me, but it energized my work in New Orleans.” — Derrin Bergeron

“The Leadership Institute is more than a training — it’s a meeting of the minds. With such a small group, we were able to delve deep into the issues that affect our communities and really pick the brains of HRC staff and fellow volunteers. I left that weekend feeling incredibly well-prepared, but also excited about the work ahead.” — Tracee McDaniel
