Civil Unions in Hawaii

Hawaii came close to passing a civil unions bill in 2009. The legislation would have permitted gay and lesbian couples to enter into civil unions and receive the benefits, protections and responsibilities that are granted to spouses under Hawaii law.

The state House of Representatives showed its support for equality when it passed the bill by a 33-17 vote. A Senate committee later deadlocked on the bill, and the full Senate defeated a procedural attempt to pull the bill from committee for a floor vote.

We look forward to the day in the near future when Hawaii recognizes that all couples and families deserve basic rights and protections.

Light Up the Night for Equality

To promote dignity and equality for all, the Unity Church and the Family Equality Coalition sponsored a candlelight vigil at the Capitol Building. More than 2,000 gathered to show support for civil unions.
